HISTORICAL METHODS
THE ULTIMATE IN CREATIVE

Fotoarte are pleased to offer this service for the ultimate in creativity and where it all began. The two printing techniques offered here date back to the 1800s in the days before enlargers were invented and when the photographer was also a research chemist!

These techniques require the use of raw chemicals and made up to the exact formulas.
Then by using an art paper, the chemicals are coated manually onto the paper surface with a brush, left to dry and exposed to sunlight with a large sheet film negative on direct contact. One very decorative feature about these old processes is the brush marks around the edges. The type of paper used is the exceptionally high quality 'Fabriano Artistico' which is 100% cotton and a very heavy duty 3OOgsm weight.

To be historically correct, inch measurements are used (centimeters equivalents in brackets).

For these prints, only one size is available.

Image Size 8" x 10" (20,3 x 25,4cm)
Paper Size 12" x 16" (30,5 x 40,6cm)

An enlarged negative is made from your negatives, any from 35mm to 6x9cm.

For those who use 6x6cm the image size will be 8" x 8" (20,3 x 20,3cm).

CYANOTYPE

Invented in 1842 by Sir John Hershel, known at the time as an astronomer and scientist, also the discoverer of sodium thiosulphate which has always been known as an effective fixer.

The cyanotype print is purely iron-based and with this chemistry, when mixed, has excellent light sensitive properties. The result, after exposure and processing, is a rich and beautiful prussian blue colour, which is perfect with all kinds of images.

(The image lasts as long as the paper it's printed on).

PRICE £ 100.000 (€ 51.65)

KALLITYPE

Introduced in the 1880s, this process became instantly popular around the world. In fact, most old photographs reproduced in books and originals in museums from that period are kallitypes. These prints are silver and iron based and produce a lovely rich brown colour and work well with a variety of images.

The kallitype print looks virtually the same as the platinum print, but we don't offer the platinum printing, simply because of the very high cost.

The formula we use is the original kallitype, with high grade ferric oxalate imported from the U.S.A.

We use the highest level of care with this process and image permanence is guaranteed.

PRICES £ 100.000 (€ 51.65)
