Born in London in 1969, Sean Anderson started to try his hand at black and white photography at 21, practising with friends and flatmates around the house and the streets of London, first with a second hand Nikon 801 and later with a borrowed Mamiya 6x6 330S and it's this second camera that hooks him onto using medium format. In 1993 he joins 'The 1885 Gallery' in London where he has the opportunity to develop his techniques by using their darkrooms, studio and models from their books, always with medium format cameras, black and white films and entirely handcrafted methods. In 1995-1996 he holds his first two personal exhibitions at the '1885 Gallery', with big acclaim from both club members and visitors. He is then asked to teach workshops on black and white artistic printing at the club itself. Between 1996 and 1998 his work is published in specialised Lifestyle/Fashion London magazines and he carries out photographic shoots with professional models for his own projects and other publications. Also he works with local bands for promotional material. In August 1999 he sees his photographs included into an international photographic anthology book made in Belgium. In the meantime he has put together his own studio/darkroom at home. His equipment consists of medium format cameras 6x7 cm and two reflex cameras of which one is a Leicaflex SL, lenses which include a Summicron 90mm F2 and a shift lens to control the perspective and a DeVere 203 enlarger in the darkroom, durable and sturdy, for continuos use.

At the end of September 1999 he moves to Siena with his sienese partner and here he starts his new project: artistic black and white photographs of his adoptive city and region's architecture. In April 2000 he and his partner open their shop 'Fotoarte' in the historical centre of Siena, where he produces and sells his new work which now portrays particularly striking and curious details of ancient and medieval Siena and Tuscany, together with more typical images, such as Siena Contrade symbols, with a very original and distinctive touch.

Soon after the shop opening, he becomes a member of F.I.A.F. (Italian Federation of Photographic Associations), is included in the 'New Artists' circuit of the Italian Foundation For Photography of Turin and undertakes commission work for Siena restorers and other clients. All along the rest of the year 2000, he takes part in national and international photographic competitions, has editorials published onto Italian photography and culture magazines, such as "Il Fotografo" and "Rendez-Vous Italia". He holds his first personal exhibition in Siena, has his works exhibited at the Padova Photography Expo as one of the new artists with the Foundation For Photography of Turin and is commissioned by a popular Siena club to do the photoshoot for their calendar.

The beginning of 2001 sees Sean Anderson commissioned by the Siena Arts & Culture Heritage for their cataloguing department; he is invited to be one of the judges at a photographic competition by the Soverato city council in Calabria and is appointed by the National Archive's Scientific Committee of Bassano del Grappa (VI) for pictures of some historical pieces kept in Siena to appear in their exhibition's catalogue. Later on in the year he expands his work as personal printer for other photographers from all over Italy and launches his new service of wedding photography under personal requests by various foreign couples who choose to get married in Siena, always offering prints and images strictly handmade with his particular and inimitable style and methods.

At the same time, he also works for other clients for their personal commissions, such as portfolios for hairdressers and models. During the summer of 2001 he organises together with a friend-colleague their first practical courses of black&white photography and printing in Siena, where he himself teaches handmade developing and printing in his own laboratory/shop. As for exhibitions, this year he holds a personal of his creative studio portraits in Graz (Austria) during August and September , coordinated by 'Dynamic Photo Art & Performance' association of Graz; also a personal of his Siena and Tuscany work during September at the National Museum of Photography in Brescia who decided to keep four of his prints on show in their permanent exhibitions.

For the rest of 2001 he carries on broadening his work as specialised printer, practical lessons teacher and artistic wedding photographer . He also widens his own research with new creative prints of also images of the Palio and other hidden corners of the city and surrounding areas.

On a personal level, he follows his desire to develop his artistic and technical skills, pushed on by his ever growing interest in old printing methods and photo-chemistry with the use of raw chemicals to make his own gelatin emulsions to produce new collections of work and expand his exhibiting activity in Italy and abroad with this intent in mind. Sean has been currently producing a new selection of work by using some of the earliest methods of printing dating as far back as 1835, such as 'Cyanotypes', 'Kallitypes', 'Van Dyke Prints', 'Salt Prints' and 'Bromoils'.
